A rustic 4-roomed house in the medina set around two patios and filled with plants
ABOUT: Deep inside Taroudant’s typically busy medina, an oasis awaits. A two-storey, mud-built riad, Dar Zahia and its four rooms frame an interior garden and two leafy, languid courtyards. The vibrant Arab and Berber souks are only a short stroll away – which means that the Dar’s small plunge pool and heavenly roof terrace are only a short stroll back.
ROOMS: Two bedrooms are on the ground floor, with the remaining pair one level up. The Upper Floor quarters each come with a small private terrace but share a bathroom, while the ground floor digs each have a tadelakt-covered bathroom. Note that no chamber has a toilet: a W.C is positioned just outside the rooms on each level. All have Wi-Fi and attractive fittings.
FACILITIES: Heated by solar panels when necessary, the plunge pool is set into one patio; the other courtyard is shrub-filled, jasmine-scented and birdsong-soundtracked. Still more potted plants decorate the roof terrace, which also features shaded seating areas, loungers and views over the medina rooftops towards distant, snowy Atlas Mountains. A large salon offers a further option for snoozing, while, during summer, sleeping is permitted inside tented sofa enclosures on each floor.
EXTRA INFO: Traditional Moroccan dinners can be arranged (around £15pp), as can medina tours, hammam visits, horse-riding, gentle mountain walks (steward Abdel is a former guide, so you’ll be in good hands) and bicycle hire.
The Lawrence of Morocco map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.
Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.
When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
Dar Zahia in Taroudannt was beautiful and we loved being in a totally different type of lodging from the others. Location was great for us-we'd walk to the square for dinner and the souk nearby. The breakfast was wonderful. And the service-returning from the square after dinner, we were greeted by the "guardian" and the entire courtyard lit by 2-3 dz candles and classical piano music wafting from the library. Every night he did that.
