On a journey down the spine of central Morroco, he steps back hundreds of years in the labyrinthine medina of Fez, roadtests skiing African style in the rugged Atlas Mountains, explores the crumbling kasbah of a despised Moroccan despot, and joins a family of Berber nomads in the dunes of the Sahara Desert.
Early 2013, we had a little ride with our Landrover once again. A shorter trip this time, we tried to discover most of Moroccos versatile landscapes in just 3 weeks, from the Coast to the forest regions of the Middle Atlas, from the hectic Medinas of Fés and Marrakech to the high mountain ranges of the High Atlas, and finally to the dunes of the Sahara Desert. Rabat, population 2 million, is the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco. The city is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the river Bou Regreg.
Rabat is considered Morocco's most conservative city. The nation's capital displays civilized orderliness more akin to Europe, with its citizens quietly going about their business, void of the frantic pace experienced in other African and Arabic capitals. For some this conservativeness lacks attraction, and Rabat is often overlooked in many travelers' itineraries. However, upon investigation, this low-profile yet cosmopolitan city offers a well-proportioned package of sights, restaurants, and history within the walls of its easily negotiated and largely hassle-free centre ville, medina, and kasbah. Spend a day or two exploring Rabat's relatively clean but still maze-like medina, its adjoining cliff-top kasbah, and the tree-lined boulevards of the French-designed centre ville, and you'll discover the city's fascinating past. Jarjeer is based just 24 kms south of Marrakech in the foothills of the High Atlas. We are a retirement home, orphanage and hospital to many animals. Come and meet our team of magical donkeys who are socialised, friendly and always very happy to see visitors. The Jarjeer project is supported by ‘The Machin Foundation Ltd’ a company limited by guarantee with charitable objects, registered in England and Wales. The charity was established in memory of Harry Machin, an animal lover and father of the founder of Jarjeer Mules.
All of us at Jarjeer are committed to animal welfare and those within our charge are cared for to exacting standards. Visitors are welcome to come to Jarjeer, either to just enjoy the company of the animals, walk the foothills with a donkey or to bring their children to ride one of the older donkeys.
An exciting new project involves bringing old mules from the mountains for retirement to save them from the hell of being sold on the streets of Marrakech to pull rubbish carts and other back breaking work.
This is a unique initiative but we need help from supporters now as new stables are urgently needed!
