Maroc Lodge, Amizmiz

Mountain Hotels in Morocco, Amizmiz

Blissful mountain retreat only 55km south of Marrakech. This exceptional property belongs to the family of a French doctor who treated and became a 'confidante' of Morocca's King Mohammed V.

ABOUT

A former home to Kings Mohammed V and Hassan II’s personal physician, this luxurious mountain retreat ticks the relaxation, walking and, courtesy of the adjacent small town of Amizmiz, Berber culture boxes.  It’s located 35 miles south of Marrakech.

ROOMS

Inside five acres of aromatic trees and shrubs are a quartet of secluded pavilions.  Three are one-bedroom, 80-square-metre affairs, while ‘Saint-Germain-en-Laye’ sleeps four and is almost twice as big.  They all have Berber-style, earthy-hued walls, coloured tiles and walnut wood furniture, as well as private terraces, salons, king-size beds, fancy toiletries and satellite TV.

FACILITIES

The infinity pool has valley views, and is surrounded by Maroc’s own orchard (including fig and pomegranate trees) and vegetable garden.  Both of those contribute heavily to the excellent mountain-style meals, which can be taken anywhere around the estate.  Think barley cous-cous, chicken tagine with honey and tanourt (Berber bread), plus homemade breakfast brioche. There’s also a small hammam (steam room) and spa, offering clay treatments and henna wraps, and Wi-Fi should you urgently need to tell Facebook friends how lucky you are.

MORE INFO

Staff can arrange walking, mule, mountain bike or even quad-bike tours, plus skiing at the Oukaimden resort.  Or you could just stroll to a nearby natural spring, and on, past sarsaparilla plants and small wooden bridges, to Amizmiz’s very-decent weekly souk (market) held on Tuesdays.

Maroc Lodge

The Lawrence of Morocco map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.

Maroc Lodge, Amizmiz Reviews

We had a brilliant days walk in the town and countryside..

The Hotel and its gardens were lovely and the owners and their staff did everything to make our stay very enjoyable and relaxing.
We had a brilliant days walk in the town and countryside with our guide Latifa. She took us to meet so many different people and enabled us to discover life in both the town environment and  the villages. We had lunch with a family in a Berber village who were charming and very hospitable as were everyone we met.

Maroc Lodge was terrific..

Maroc Lodge was terrific, even if the pool was arctic! The food was great, Beatrice and her staff couldn’t have been more helpful, and it was a perfect starting point for trekking.

Maroc Lodge was great, very peaceful and very relaxed.

I would like to thank you for the treat of a bottle of excellent Moroccan wine on the occasion of my wife's 50 th birthday,  it was much appreciated.  David's team at Maroc Lodge were also very kind on this special day, providing complementary apperatifs, a birthday cake and a small gift, including their own olive oil.  Once again a nice touch.

Maroc Lodge was great, very peaceful and very relaxed, in fact we were the only people there at one point.  Unfortunately the weather was not great,  but we did decide to do as you recommended and take the hike in the mountains which was superb.  I should have listened to you on the first place.  The local guide from the town, Latifa, is excellent and is highly recommended.

The definite highlight was our wonderful day out with the lovely Latifa.

We were likewise very pleased with our accommodation at Maroc Lodge. The definite highlight was our wonderful day out with the lovely Latifa, who also arranged for her friend to visit our daughter in the hotel for a henna tattoo.  The dinners at Maroc Lodge were delicious and the local serving staff very friendly. We did find that the reception from the French owners was less welcoming and they made little effort to have a chat during our stay or make any suggestions as to what was to be found in the local area  - this was particularly noticeable as for most of our visit we were the only guests, and was in contrast to the local people we met in Marrakech and around Amizmiz.

From the hotel's own website we had also gained the impression that Maroc Lodge was more rural than it actually turned out to be - we were expecting to be further out in the mountains and to have the very dark night skies. Surprisingly it was probably more tranquil in the Palmeraie- there was quite a lot of noise coming up from Amizmiz.

We definitely have more to explore in this region.

Maroc Lodge is really great and David, Beatrice,  Said looked after us superbly it really is a gem and the food there was really very good.  Instead of the Berber walk we made a Berber drive which in our rather delicate state was ideal and really interesting - we definitely have more to explore in this region.  One negative was the taxi ride from Amizmiz to Marrakech a bone rattling experience, no air con and we even picked up some other passengers on the way without any reference to us! He didn’t know where the hotel was either.

We felt particularly looked after.

At Maroc Lodge, we felt particularly looked after as I got a stomach problem and without my requesting, Beatrix realised the set menu food would be too rich. She kindly arranged for me to have  a special broth, and plain fish the next meal too.
Our  guide on the two walking trips we did, Latifa Asselouf was exactly as her name states! seems to know absolutely everybody within a wide geographical range of Amizmiz and gave us two wonderful and different experiences of the countryside and people.

Charming staff.

Transfer to Maroc Lodge also punctual and helpful and the Lodge itself was just great - Beatrice and her team of charming staff made us very comfortable and provided excellent meals and anticipated anything we might have needed.  It was very cold and there was a power cut but they swiftly appeared and lit fires willingly.

One of the most rewarding days we have spent in a very long time...

Both Dar One and Maroc Lodge were wonderful, it was lovely to have the contrast between the buzz of Marrakech and the quite of the mountains.
The days trek we had with Latifa was fantastic, she is a great guide and we felt extremely safe and relaxed with her.  It was one of the most rewarding days we have spent in a very long time and we were left with a great insight into the challenging life of the Berbers.

Outstanding in quality and value...

Maroc Lodge was outstanding in quality and value.I have no complaints and would return ,my only comments on reflection i would have gone to the coast first then to Maroc Lodge then to Dar Zemora as that would have been close to the airport.

Attentive staff

Maroc Lodge – lovely spacious bungalows, attentive staff and idyllic setting.  Breakfast is good quality but everything is sweet – pancakes / cakes / fruit etc. After 5 days I was craving something savory.

Definately a hidden gem.

Maroc Lodge is definately a hidden gem. We loved the whole ambiance ( a feeling of a former era), the natural setting is super , the privacy of the pavillions , most welcome.
The Lodge is much nearer to, what is in fact quite a large town, the noise from which is far greater  , particularly in the eves, than your description suggests.  The pool area is beautiful, we were v lucky , the Lodge was not at full capacity, so there were enough sunbeds & plenty of space. Had all the pavillions been booked, not only would there not be enough sunbeds, but simply , not enough space around the pool. I realise that some people would be "walking " during the day, but if like us, it is simply too hot to walk in the day, this might be an issue.

We opted to walk at 4pm, as suggested by Lafita. She is a wonderful, informative, lovely person, we really enjoyed our time with her. But , we had assumed , that we would find it easy to do short walks unaccompanied , in fact the location & terrain does not lend itself to that. I feel that if someone ( as I did makes enquiries about general walking), this should be pointed out.

We loved the flexibility of being able to eat on our terrace. Although the quality of the food was good, the repetition of daily menu , was a minus point. Every lunchtime, a pastry tart & sorbet, every eve a tagine. I realise that many people opt to only stay a few days, so perhaps nobody has mentioned this. As there is no alternative venue to eat, perhaps they might "ring the changes a little".

The above issues , although worth bringing to your attention, were fairly minor. All the staff, from Beatrice & David ( we also met Bruno, who sweetly gave us a present from Jardin Magirelle), the lovely waitresses, cleaners, massuesse & gardeners, are truly lovely . We won't forget  the gorgeous natural setting & wonderful kindness of the staff.

Latifa, the resident guide, was the icing on the cake...

Maroc Lodge, a different pace altogether but it completely captured our hearts! David and Beatrice were amazing hosts and our wonderful bungalow became a home from home immediately. Latifa, the resident guide, was the icing on the cake and we can't wait to enjoy more of her amazing treks, Berber house tea and bread, Tagine pot making and stunning picnics (not a cheese sandwich in sight!).
Every day, the sun shone and every day we enjoyed something new that Morocco had to offer.

Maroc Lodge was a great success.

Maroc Lodge was a great success and though it was fairly painfully conceived (ie I took a while to try to access what it was really like before I went). Your staff were patient and very helpful and it turned out that I had made the right decision for us. To me Bruno and his team could not have been more spoiling to us and we had an idyllic place to stay with every comfort which was non-intrusive and like being in his home(which it is ). For us the food was outstanding but we like good, wholesome , freshly cooked and just what you want on chilly nights.

We went on a mountain treck with Latifa. We did say we only wanted half a day but somehow went for a day. We were shown olive oil making and maize grinding using the same methods of ancient times. We saw children at school and were treated to songs by them. There was a feeling that we ought to to help them financially but who can blame them for setting the scene so to speak and there was no cohersion and Latifa was very charming smart and an inspiration for her people.

I think Maroc Lodge is an outstanding place with beautiful gardens and unobtrusive service. For those who want more action they might want to stay for just a few days. We were happy to unwind for the 4 days-----no trouble at all!
